What Happened to Our Nest Egg!?

Housewife Atsuko (AMAMI Yuki) is saving up for retirement, trying to live frugally as she worries about the future. The other members of her family live comparatively carefree lives: husband Akira (MATSUSHIGE Yutaka) knows nothing of their financial circumstances, while daughter Mayumi (SHINKAWA Yua) and son Hayato (SETO Toshiki) are at the beginning of their adult lives.

Suddenly, a series of unfortunate happenings spell financial disaster: a family argument saddles Atsuko with the cost of her father-in-law’s funeral, she is fired from her part-time job, bankruptcy ends Akira’s company, Mayumi plans an extravagant wedding, and Atsuko’s mother-in-law (KUSABUE Mitsuko) – whose big-spending reputation precedes her – moves in too!

It is thought that in Japan, a person needs 20 million yen to retire comfortably, yet the financial worry this causes often goes undiscussed. Taking aim at this taboo, What Happened to Our Nest Egg!? sees previous JFTFP guest MAEDA Tetsu (Do Unto Others, JFTFP24; A Banana? At This Time of Night?, JFTFP20) shine a comical light on the economic issues we will all face eventually and the ways matters of money affect families.

専業主婦の篤子は老後資金を貯めるため節約に努めるが、夫や子どもたちは非協力的。そんなおり、義父の葬儀費用負担、篤子のパート解雇、夫の会社倒産、娘の豪華結婚式計画、浪費家の姑の同居と、次々と災難が降りかかってくる。老後2000万円問題に焦点を当て、「こんな夜更けにバナナかよ 愛しき実話」の前田哲監督が金銭が家族に与える影響をコミカルに描く。
